Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder caused by word associations as a young child. Ford started to become attracted to acting when she was a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she wasn't a good fit there. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure a place on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. The actor was later to play recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however at the time, she had already made her television debut in a 1991 episode from Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. The stage was her main focus and was a member of the company's season 2000-2001. But Tate was soon gaining attention for her stand-up comic, which she added to her show in 1996.
